It is always interesting how, later in life, new things can come to you, and old things can come back to you after a long absence.
This last year I have had:
* My first experience of participating in an IT support on-call rota since 1997.
* My 2nd ever job appraisal, the 1st also being in 1997.
* My first bonus, following that appraisal.
* My first ever experience of attending a tech conference.

Heya! I'm Rafe (pronounced "Rayf") and it's been a minute since I posted an updated so here we go! First off, I'm here to chill and have a good time. There are enough bad vibes in the real world so don't be bringing that. Okay, now that we're past that
I'm an -brained elder who has been happily married since 2009, a proud since 2010, and an helpdude since 2018.
My preferences lean toward - my daily drivers are an 15 Plus and a Air (M3) - but I also run 11 Pro and Mint at home. You won't find me taking sides on any "this tech vs that tech" arguments.
Aside from tech stuff, I post a lot (probably more) about , , and other systems, as well as , especially weird niche - my current favorite bands are , , and . Then there are the random thoughts and occasional shitposts
Also, I dabble in , , and ! Links for where I post that stuff are in my profile.
Let's be friends!
Had a good afternoon at ideal35.fr today. We had a problem with an old Nvidia card unable to detect the screen and sticking to VGA only resolution. The onboard Intel GPU was much happier to detect the screen properly and the HDMI should work even better.
We had a good chat, updated his PC and set the system to automatically update.
I also met a new volunteer who is good with hardware and knows Linux too.
Anyway, this week has also brought many really positive things.
Yesterday morning I had a meeting with a public institution. The people in charge are really good, both technically and as human beings. We've known each other for almost 20 years, and we've been working together ever since.
"The institutions above us are pushing to move everything to closed solutions. We see things differently.
We'll keep running our email with open source solutions, just as we've done until now, without problems. We'll keep using LibreOffice, providing Open Source operating systems on the PCs in our libraries, managing our files and collaboration with systems like Nextcloud.
We don't want to depend on closed clouds run by third-party companies.
We want our consultants working on our machines, looking after our data. Not their consultants working on their machines, with our data inside, which effectively becomes theirs.
Can you keep supporting us"
I had a late lunch.
But the photos of my lunch should make it pretty clear what my answer was, and how happy I was to give it.
They're not refusing to move forward. They're refusing to follow the trend of locking themselves into someone else's cage.
Luckily, the world is also full of really good people.
