Dear programming folks, how do you deal with boring period of learning something new

I'm not a fast learner. I do want to learn new languages, but it's really difficult for me to start from basics, becasue I think I'm gonna wing it thanks to my experience, but of course it bites me later. Complex projects might demotivate me quickly (e.g. I want to make SSG for myself using chibi-scheme...), because I'm overwhelmed with my lack of understanding. Oddly enough, I'm better with balancing learning fundamentals and diving deep into unknown in other areas.
