This, in turn, reinforces slow reading, and robs one of the ability to pickup abstract concepts quickly and to see wide-ranging connections in related fieldsthe foundations of all joyful reading. Every reading session then turns into a long, hard slough, a losing fight against one's own flagging motivation. Boredom quickly sets in, and books start to resemble shadowy monsters.
Most practitioners today are not readers. And no amount of coaching and coaxing can turn a forty-something IT practitioner who had never read a textbook into a habitual reader. Indeed, by the time one enters the industry in his early twenties and if he is not already a habitual reader, it is well neigh impossible to turn that person into a lifelong reader.
A few years back, IT practitioners had no choice but to read others' buggy code. But today, they use LLMs to read and write code. And text, too. This trend also explains the poor writing quality of current crop of IT books.
